Whisky Regions: Speyside

Discover Speyside: One of the five whisky-producing regions in Scotland. Nowhere else in the world will you find such a concentration of distilleries within such a small geographic area, and it is by far the largest producer of single malt whisky.

Speyside

Set into a small corner of northeast Scotland, the Speyside region is dominated by the River Spey and its tributaries. Nowhere else in the world will you find such a concentration of distilleries within such a small geographic area, and it is by far the largest producer of single malt whisky.

History

During the early 19th century, the area was an ideal hideout for anyone wanting to escape the notice of the dreaded taxmen due to its often-inaccessible forested foothills and glens. Countless distilleries sprung up during this time in the remote hills above the river Livet.

In the late 19th century, the region was one of the first to receive a network of rail lines which ran casks from the distilleries to the blenders and grocers in the central belt of Scotland. For the first time, Glasgow and Edinburgh could be reached easily, and from there, open distribution to the rest of the world.

Flavour Profile

Speyside whiskies tend to have a particularly elegant fruity profile which includes notes of apple, pear, honey and vanilla. Sherry butts are also commonly used for maturing or finishing whisky so often you’ll find notes of dried fruit and spice.

Notable Distilleries

The Macallan, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are the best-known producers and are household names in every corner of the globe.

One to try: Officially the best-selling single malt Scotch whisky in the world, Glenfiddich 12 Year Old brims with notes of pear, butterscotch, cream and oak before a long smooth finish. Matured in Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks for 12 years, this original expression in the Glenfiddich range is perfect for whisky beginners.
